This week in 3ZS @RF, we had an exciting time exploring the world of animation. The children kicked things off with a debate on the question, "Can a picture move?" before putting their ideas into practice by creating their very own flip books. We discussed how this simple technique is the foundation of how cartoons are made, sparking lots of creative thinking and enthusiasm. Next week, we’ll be taking it a step further as we begin to create our own animations!

Year 6 Design & Technology: Exploring the World of Pop-Up Books

This week, Year 6LD @RF, students have been diving into an exciting Design & Technology (DT) project focused on creating their very own pop-up books. This hands-on project allows them to apply a wide range of skills, explore their creativity, and collaborate with their peers while learning the mechanics behind pop-up elements.

Throughout the term, students have been introduced to the fascinating mechanics behind pop-up books. They’ve learned how simple folds, layers, and tabs can transform flat pages into three-dimensional works of art. From basic techniques like parallel folds and V-folds to more complex mechanisms, the Year 6 class has gained a solid understanding of how to make static images come to life.

One of the key skills students have been honing is the ability to generate and develop their own ideas. Using pattern pieces as guides, they have been designing their pop-up elements, considering how each fold and cut can enhance the storytelling in their books. They’ve practiced different folding techniques, such as concertina and accordion folds, to create depth and movement. Through careful planning, trial and error, and revisions, students are learning how to refine their ideas into polished, functional pop-ups.

In YR2RE @RF have been enjoying art this half term. We have been exploring colour mixing and mixing colours linked to warm and cold colours. Once we mixed colours we came up with names for them like slimy green, poppy red, chocolate brown, lavender, plum and sandy yellow. Finally, we created our own painting with a range of effects inspired by the artist Ted Harrison.

Last week we went to the local park as part of our science and DT. We have been learning about microhabitats and had predicted which minibeast we thought we might find before we went. We enjoyed looking for minibeasts and describing the conditions of the microhabitats we found. Additionally, we collected items for the minibeast bug viewer we made in DT.
